At Essential Elements Spa, we love to support our clients in their growth, especially when it comes to self-care for the body, mind, and soul. Here are some tips we shared recently in a newsletter that are worth repeating here.
Three Easy Self-Care Ideas for Your Body
BREATHE, BREATHE, BREATHE. Bring more oxygen into your body by taking three deep breaths. As you inhale, concentrate on breathing as far down into your lungs as possible by letting the air puff out your abdomen first and then your chest. When you exhale, first begin moving the air out of your body from the abdomen. Let your breath move easily though, taking care not to hold it or hyperventilate.
MAKE ONE HEALTHY CHANGE. Make one small healthy change to your diet for the week. Here are some ideas: drink an extra glass of water each day, have an extra portion of veggies at each meal, drink tea instead of coffee even for just one day.
LAUGH. Seek out situations that tickle your funny bone. Laugh and let it roar! We love the YouTube videos of babies laughing. Just google “babies laughing” and watch one or two. You can’t help but laugh with them. There are also some hilarious old comedy sketches (I Love Lucy comes to mind).
Three Easy Self-Care Ideas for Your Mind
GO CLOUD WATCHING. Cloud watching is something many of us did as children. It can be both a game and an adventure, because you spend time creatively relating cloud shapes to something you know. Have you ever seen an angel cloud? Or a wildcat? You might see one on your next cloud watching adventure. Lie on your back, relax, and watch the sky.
CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE. Take a different route to work. Leave a couple of minutes early, if you must, and have a new experience, creating new neural pathways in your brain to help keep it healthy.
CHECK SOMETHING OFF YOUR LIST. Take care of a little something on your “to do” list. Fix a small annoyance at home that’s been nagging you - a button lost, a drawer that’s stuck, or a light bulb that needs replacing. Once finished, that’s one project that won’t be nagging you anymore.
Three Easy Self-Care Ideas for Your Soul
LEND A HAND. There is old saying that says, “Giving is receiving.” If you don’t know what that means, take some time to lend a hand. It could be a family, friend, or stranger. Carry a bag, open a door, or help with a chore without expectation of anything in return from them. You’ll find the meaning of that saying when you do.
SPLURGE A LITTLE. Take yourself out to coffee and splurge on a latte. Buy something small for yourself – something that you can afford but that you usually talk yourself out of. Do so and enjoy it.
HAVE A SELF-DATE. Spend an hour alone doing something that nourishes you. It could be reading, taking a walk, your hobby, visiting a museum or gallery, etc.
Self-care doesn’t have to take a lot of time, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive. If you make a commitment to do something for your body, mind, or soul each day, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much better you feel.
